Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for the Digital Nomad visa without a university degree? +
Yes. The law allows qualification to be confirmed with three years of professional experience in your current field. This requires a properly documented body of evidence — reference letters from employers or clients, contracts, a portfolio of completed projects. The immigration service accepts such documents on par with diplomas, provided they are legally correctly drawn up. This is exactly the scenario we work through in detail in the Pro package.
What minimum income is required to apply for the nomad visa? +
In 2026 — from €2,849 per month for the main applicant (200% of the minimum wage in Spain). Adding a spouse adds €1,069, and each child €356. If income is slightly below the threshold, in some cases the gap can be covered by savings in a bank account — the amount should cover the missing income for 36 months.
I'm a freelancer with several clients. Does this qualify? +
Yes. The programme is open to self-employed people and freelancers, provided more than 80% of income comes from outside Spain. You can combine several sources — salary, freelance income, dividends. Sources must be confirmed with contracts, invoices, or bank statements.
Can I apply for the residence permit while already in Spain? +
Yes. If you are already in Spain on a Schengen visa or another legal basis, you can apply directly for a residence permit valid up to 3 years, skipping the visa stage. This is faster — review takes about 20 business days.
What documents are needed to apply as a digital nomad? +
The basic package includes a passport, a police clearance certificate, proof of qualification, an employment contract or client contracts, bank statements, and medical insurance. All documents are translated into Spanish by a sworn translator and apostilled if needed. The exact list always depends on your situation — type of employment, method of application, family composition. At the consultation we prepare a personalised checklist for your case.
How long does the whole process take? +
Document preparation takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on case complexity. The application review takes 15 to 45 business days.
Is medical insurance required? +
Yes, this is a mandatory requirement. The insurance must be issued by a Spanish provider with coverage of at least €30,000 per applicant. Cost starts from €50 per month. We can recommend trusted providers with suitable terms.
Do I need residential registration in Spain to apply? +
It depends on the application method. Through the consulate — not required. When applying for the residence permit from within Spain, you'll need residential registration (Empadronamiento). If you don't yet have housing in Spain, we can help arrange registration through our partners.
Will I become a Spanish tax resident? +
Yes, if you spend more than 183 days in the country in a calendar year. But this does not necessarily mean high taxes. Digital Nomad residence permit holders can apply for a special regime — the Beckham Law — which fixes the income tax rate at 24% instead of the progressive scale of up to 47%. This regime applies to income up to €600,000 per year for the first 6 years.
Do I need to open a bank account in Spain? +
Not for the application. However, after moving, a local account will significantly simplify life: renting housing, utilities, insurance, taxes. Resident status gives you the right to open an account at any Spanish bank.
What if I change employer after getting the residence permit? +
Changing employer is allowed provided the new job meets the programme's requirements: remote work for a foreign company with a sufficient income level. When renewing the residence permit, you'll need to provide updated documents from the new employer.
What happens if I spend less than 6 months in Spain in a year? +
There is no minimum day requirement for the first term of the residence permit. However, upon renewal you must confirm residence of at least 6 months in each 12-month period. If this condition is not met, renewal may be refused.
Can I get Spanish citizenship? +
Yes. After 5 years of residency you gain the right to permanent residence, and after 10 years the right to apply for citizenship. A Spanish passport is among the strongest in the world and gives freedom of movement across the entire EU.
