Lufthansa Group has rolled out a new tool to improve baggage tracking efficiency, giving passengers greater transparency and digital support throughout their journey. Customers of Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings can now securely share their AirTag or other Find My network device location data with the airline's baggage tracing system.
"Using Apple AirTag data is just one of many ways we're continuously improving the customer experience across all the airlines in our group, drawing on innovative digital solutions," said Dieter Vranckx, member of the Executive Board and Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group. He stressed the company's commitment to digital innovation and highlighted the key role of the "Digital Hangar" team, comprising around 1,000 specialists who develop new digital services and support customers at every stage of their journey.
Oliver Schmitt, head of Lufthansa Group's Digital Hangar, said the company has made significant progress in baggage tracking in recent months, and that integration with AirTags will further improve tracing accuracy. "Thanks to our app and website, passengers can now quickly find solutions if there's a problem with their baggage," he added.
Apple AirTag is a compact Bluetooth-based device designed to help locate lost items such as keys, wallets, or bags, using the Find My app. It taps into the extensive Find My network, which includes more than a billion Apple devices, and enables the location of lost items with a high degree of privacy thanks to end-to-end encryption. In a recent iOS 18.2 update, Apple introduced the Share Item Location feature, which allows AirTag or other Find My network device location data to be securely shared with third parties, including airlines.
Using the Find My app on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, users can create a link to share their baggage's location data. Anyone who receives the link sees a web page with an interactive map that automatically updates as the location changes, along with a timestamp of the last update. Tracking stops as soon as the owner retrieves the item, and can also be turned off manually or automatically after seven days.
For Lufthansa Group, this initiative marks an important step in its digital transformation process, giving passengers additional ways to keep track of their baggage and reducing stress in the event of delayed or lost luggage.
