World's longest flight to link Australia with Europe and the US

Qantas has announced the 2026 launch of the world's longest non-stop flight, which will let passengers see two sunrises during a single journey. The initiative, known as Project Sunrise, was first unveiled in 2017, but its rollout was delayed by almost a decade due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The new route will connect Sydney with London and New York, offering direct flights lasting between 19 and 22 hours.

Despite the long flight time, the direct service will cut travel time by up to four hours compared with current routes involving connections, which is especially appealing to passengers who value comfort and speed. To deliver this project, Qantas is investing £1.2 billion in acquiring 12 specially fitted Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, ordered in 2022. These aircraft are equipped with additional fuel tanks and advanced technology to enable long-distance non-stop flights.

First-class cabins will feature six individual suites with 50% more space than current models, fitted with fold-out beds, reclining seats, and 32-inch touchscreens. In addition, there will be 52 business suites, 40 premium economy seats, and 140 more spacious economy seats. Seats will be equipped with adjustable headrests, multi-function tray tables, two USB-C ports, 13.3-inch Bluetooth-enabled entertainment touchscreens, and additional shelving for personal devices.

To support passenger wellbeing during the long flight, a dedicated "Wellbeing Zone" will be created, accessible to all cabin classes. In this zone, passengers will be able to stretch, enjoy refreshing drinks, and follow exercise guidance aimed at reducing the risk of circulation problems associated with prolonged sitting.

Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson stressed that the new direct route will not only make travel more convenient, but also strengthen the connection between remote Australia and the rest of the world.
