Croatia updates the terms for its digital nomad visa
25.08.2025 21:10 · updated on 12.07.2026
Croatia has extended the maximum validity of its digital nomad visa to three years and formalised the ability for family members to join after the application is approved.
The temporary residence programme for remote professionals, first launched in 2021, targets citizens of countries outside the EU, EEA, and Switzerland who work remotely for foreign companies or clients. The latest changes took effect in March 2025 and expanded the possibilities for foreign professionals to stay in the country.
According to Croatia's Ministry of the Interior, the standard period of stay under the visa is up to 18 months. If the initial permit is issued for a shorter period, it can be extended by another 6 months by filing an application no later than 60 days before the end of the current period. Reapplication is only possible six months after the previous permit ends (regardless of whether it was for digital nomad status, family reunification, or partnership). Applications can be submitted online.
Who can apply?
To obtain a temporary residence permit, a digital nomad must:
- \n
- confirm the remote nature of the work (employment contract or service agreement); \n
- if self-employed, provide business registration documents; \n
- have a monthly income of at least €3,295 (about $3,806); \n
- take out private health insurance for the entire period of stay; \n
- provide a certificate of no criminal record from the country of residence; \n
- confirm accommodation in Croatia; \n
- hold a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended period of stay. \n
How to apply
The candidate must assemble a document package (translated into English and Croatian) and submit the application online, through a consulate, or in person at a Croatian police administration.
Cost of the digital nomad visa
When applying through a consulate or diplomatic mission:
- \n
- temporary stay: €55.74 (about $64); \n
- long-stay visa: €93 (about $107). \n
When applying within Croatia:
- \n
- temporary stay: €46.45 (about $54); \n
- administrative fee for the biometric residence permit: €9.29 (about $11); \n
- biometric residence card: €31.85 (about $37); \n
- expedited card production: €59.73 (about $69). \n
Once approved, the applicant must register their residential address within three days (if already in the country) or within the set period after entry. The biometric residence card must then be collected in person. Detailed information on the procedure is available on the website of Croatia's Ministry of the Interior.
