Slovenian authorities have announced the launch of a new visa programme aimed at remote employees and freelancers. The initiative's goal is to attract skilled professionals and boost the development of tourism in the country. Applications for the visa are expected to become available in the fourth quarter of 2025, tentatively in November.
The new visa is designed for citizens of countries outside the European Union and European Economic Area. It grants the right to live and work in Slovenia for one year, provided the applicant works remotely for a company outside the country or provides services to foreign clients.
An option for the whole family
The programme allows entry together with family members, provided that accompanying persons will not be employed within Slovenia. The main applicant must confirm their financial standing and demonstrate that their income is sufficient to support both themselves and their family members.
Specific income requirements have not yet been published, but prospective applicants are advised to prepare supporting documents in advance: bank statements, employment or service contracts, client agreements, or recent payslips. Applications will be able to be submitted online or through Slovenian consulates and embassies.
For those already in Slovenia on another visa, there is also an option to apply through local authorities. In that case, the applicant may be issued a temporary residence permit while their documents are under review.
Limitations and outlook
The digital nomad visa is valid for 12 months and is not subject to immediate renewal. Once the period of stay ends, the applicant must leave the country for at least six months before being able to reapply.
Amid the growing popularity of digital nomad programmes, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, Slovenia is seeking to take its rightful place among European countries with similar visa initiatives. Such schemes are currently in place, for example, in Croatia, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Portugal, and Spain.
Slovenia offers an attractive balance of cost of living and quality of environment: an Alpine climate with access to the Adriatic, picturesque mountain landscapes, and cities that regularly appear on lists of the best places to live in the world.
