In 2024, Paris once again topped the list of the world's most popular cities, according to analytics firm Euromonitor International. The city earned this status thanks to major events such as the Summer Olympics, as well as its rich cultural life. New York also drew attention, climbing to sixth place overall and becoming the most visited city in the US.
After Paris, the list continues with Madrid, Tokyo, Rome, and Milan — cities known for their history, culture, and unique atmosphere. Cairo, Zhuhai (China), and Jerusalem round out the ranking.
The United States is also represented in the ranking: Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Orlando, Miami, and San Francisco all made the top 100. New York ranked first among American cities, showing rising popularity thanks to improved infrastructure and event activity.
Euromonitor International analyses cities across a range of factors: tourism service standards, infrastructure, economic activity, safety, and environmental sustainability. In 2024, international travel grew by 19%, reflecting tourism's recovery after the pandemic.
European cities remain a favourite destination for travellers. Over the year, the region welcomed 793 million tourists. Bangkok, Istanbul, and London led the way for international arrivals. Bangkok, for example, recorded a record 32 million visitors.
Despite this growth, the industry faces challenges: labour shortages, economic slowdowns, and geopolitical instability. At the same time, travellers are increasingly choosing lesser-known destinations in search of unique experiences. Personalisation and authenticity are becoming key criteria when choosing where to go.
