Taiwan Extends Digital Nomad Visa to Two Years

Taiwan is expanding its remote-work visa program: starting in 2026, the maximum cumulative stay under the digital nomad visa will grow from six months to two years. The visa is aimed at remote employees as well as business owners who work with overseas companies and clients.

The program itself launched in 2025. The visa isn't issued for the full two years right away — it starts with a six-month permit that can then be renewed three more times for the same length, so the total stay adds up to four six-month periods.

Income requirements vary by age. Applicants aged 20 to 29 must show earnings of at least $20,000 a year, while those 30 and older need a minimum annual income of $40,000.

Applicants also have to prove that their average bank balance over the previous six months stayed above $10,000. The required documents include proof of remote employment and international medical insurance.

The application form can be filled out online, but the process isn't fully remote — it must be printed, signed, and submitted to a Taiwanese representative office. Processing takes roughly seven to ten days.

The longer validity period makes the program better suited to a genuine relocation rather than just a short winter stay. Even so, applicants need to keep in mind not only the income and savings requirements but also the need to renew the visa every six months.

Taiwan also offers an Employment Gold Card for highly skilled professionals, combining a visa and work permit in one. It's valid for up to three years and can suit those who eventually hope to obtain permanent residency.

Taiwan isn't the only Asian country courting remote workers with a dedicated visa program. Thailand, for instance, offers a multiple-entry DTV visa for digital nomads, freelancers, and employees of foreign companies. The choice between such programs usually comes down to the length of stay needed, income requirements, and long-term plans for permanent residency.
